‘You built a house on land you don't own’: Lawyer flips the script on builder whose poor craftsmanship led to client's ranch house getting foreclosed

'Who builds a house on land they don't own?', would be my first question after reading this story that took place in the 70s. It seems absurd to even think about it.

Back in 1972, u/CampfiresInConifers's parents planned to build a ranch house in the countryside, after their mortgage was approved by a local bank. It was a small, rural kind of town, you know the type. The builder, who we will call Bob, overcommitted himself and left inexperienced workers to do their jobs, resulting in numerous mistakes and poor workmanship. We all love a good contractor, right?

Well, Bob clearly wasn't, and as time went on, the building part was taking longer and longer. OP's parents had to redo most of the work because it was so poorly done. Long story short, the bank and Bob pressured OP's parents to accept the flawed house, but they were unwilling to sign off on it, because of the reasons stated above.

The bank threatened to foreclose on the house, and Bob threatened to sue them because they were 'in breach of contract'. The nerve of Bob got my fists all clenched up. Imagine you get a gig, get paid, do a terrible job, and you have the audacity to get mad at your clients for refusing to accept said terrible job. Exhausted, OP's parents sought help from an attorney. As luck would have it, they stumbled upon a clever little genius. Or maybe just someone who wrote the fine print. Either way, the events that unfolded were pretty hilarious. Sometimes things just find a way of working themselves out. Oftentimes, that happens with the help of a good lawyer.
